What is the Empowering Performance Grant

Now more than ever, Open Arts Alliance is committed to creating a safe space for artists. While Covid-19 has invariably affected the landscape of arts around our country, we at Open Arts Alliance acknowledge the need for theatre art is more important than ever.

In response to this global pandemic, Open Arts Alliance is proud to create the Empowering Performance Grant. This grant will be offered to two recipients in the form of $1,000 awards for the direct support of new and original work by artists. This grant will support 2 virtual social distant pieces of theatre, which can be recorded and streamed as a means of celebrating art and offering hope at this challenging time. We are  seeking submissions that may be safely recording by artist(s) in the same quarantine space. 

Artists with projects that can be completed in quarantine are encouraged to apply. Examples include, but are not limited to: solo shows, cabaret acts, dance theatre pieces, musical presentations. While all genres and materials will be considered, works should be in line with Open Arts Alliance’s vision for engagement and accessible to family audiences.

Recipients will be awarded financial support and assistance in recording/filming the project. Recipients are responsible for executing the project in the fall of 2020. Final performances will be streamed and shared free of charge on Open Arts Alliance’s social media platforms, as well as promoted on social media in conjunction with the creating artist.

Who Can Apply

  • Individual artists (18 years of age and older)
  • Non-profit arts organizations
  • New and established artists encouraged to apply.
  • BIPOC artists are encouraged to apply.
  • Artists or Theatre Company must be located in the United States


  • Submitted projects must have the ability to be executed in social distance filming- therefore they should feature one artist or multiple artists who are quarantining together. 
  • Projects will be filmed
  • We are NOT seeking video conferencing projects

About OAA

Open Arts Alliance is a social-service organization which utilizes students’ artistic abilities to facilitate social service outreach to the senior population of our community focusing on brightening the day (and spreading education) to aging adults with dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease.

We achieve our mission through each of our 5 cornerstone programs feature volunteerism training and arts education to ensure that all our students-ages 4 to 104 (yes, really)- experience the power of personal growth through the performing arts.

While you can learn a lot about our accomplishments in the first five years of our life by visiting our list of past productions or reading about the awards we have won- it doesn’t tell the full story. The over 4,500 students we see annually (in classrooms, schools, rehearsal rooms, senior centers, etc.) can tell that story better than we can. We are detail oriented and caring. We are an organization of constant reflection and self improvement, but we are also driven by the need to change the landscape of both the arts and arts education.
